About the Speaker:
Kim Wiggins, OTR/L is an experienced occupational therapist specializing in pediatrics who has worked extensively in public school settings, outpatient, and home-based services to children of all ages with a variety of diagnoses and special needs. Kim is currently a full-time therapist at the Binghamton City School District and the owner of www.OTKimWiggins.com, which primarily focuses on increasing the attention level and motor skills of children and providing educational opportunities for parents and professionals. Kim Wiggins is an experienced National program developer who has produced and presented training workshops and seminars on school-based therapeutic topics to therapists, teachers, administrators, and parents. She has presented to audiences of up to 400 participants nationwide since 2010. About the Course: Did you know that studies have shown that approximately 70% of school aged children with learning disabilities have retained primitive reflexes and 80% of all learning is acquired through vision? Children are often misdiagnosed with attention deficits without taking a good look at possible visual insufficiencies or retained reflexes. Primitive reflexes emerge in utero and should be integrated no later than the age of 2 years old. Retained primitive reflexes are becoming more common and strongly impact the function of these students. In addition, there is a rise of focus and attention issues in the classroom, which can be related to visual issues. Unfortunately, if a child is having difficulty using their eyes, they will often give up or work twice as hard as other children causing increased frustration and a lack of motivation. This hands-on course will help you be able to explain retained reflexes and the visual system. It will also provide you with a reflex screening process that can be completed in a school setting to determine if a student is exhibiting retained primitive reflexes. You will also be provided with an abundance of practical compensation techniques and treatment strategies for retained reflexes and visual deficits that can be completed at home, therapy, or classroom. Wear comfortable clothes so that you can practice the movements for a true understanding of how to use these techniques with children. |
