Description
Do you remember those classrooms which always had unique areas and themes in them? The environment seemed to offer more enjoyment and students seemed more engaged in the learning process. Well those teachers should be applauded for designing environments to enhance learning. Students with sensory processing disorders, including those with Autism, Asperger’s, PDD, ADD, ADHD, learning disorders, and behavioral disorders, more often have difficulty in traditional classrooms and school environments.
You can learn ways to help these students without having to modify your entire curriculum. Learn about sensory processing as it applies to learning. At this workshop you will learn to assess environments, learn about sensory spaces, qualities of each space, activities and materials to use and ways to incorporate these modifications to optimize learning and achieve a positive classroom. Learn how to transition students from one activity to another including recess, lunch, and specials in the shortest time possible. Best of all you don’t have to increase your budget, time off task, or physical space to apply these techniques.
Therapists have a short amount of time to work with students and more time is being spent consulting with teachers to improve learning. These techniques will allow you to make recommendations and attain results with the school environment. Parents can apply this same information and techniques at home to assist with transitions, studying, and overall sensory processing.
